The SC-II is a two-way loudspeaker aficionado’s dream come true. While most two-way loudspeakers either sit, precariously mounted, on required stands, or are housed in a diminutive floor standing cabinets, the Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-II’s enclosure stands a full 65" high. This allows for proper positioning of the 1" composite textile tweeter and the two 6.5" woofers so that the listener is immersed in music that is time and phase coherent.

The cabinet size of the SC-II (65" high x 8" wide x 10" deep, with an incredibly small floor space requirement of only one square foot) allows for substantial dynamic range without the use of ports or vents, which while allowing a cabinet of lesser size to achieve greater bass response, can also color the signal with the port or vents tuned frequency. The use of such devices can give the perception of "one note bass" and a high degree of repetitiveness with regards to the listeners perception of the music. Not so with the SC-II. Bass guitars, cellos, and drums are re-created with stunning realism, as well as truly amazing reproduction of vocals.

With it’s high efficiency, coupled with a very flat impedance curve, the SC-II is capable of being driven effectively with just about any type of high quality power amplifier currently available. In fact, with the SC-II’s amazing accuracy and even more remarkable price (starting at a suggested US retail of $2,495.00 per pair), a smart, value minded audiophile is capable of putting together a system capable of true world class performance at a very reasonable price.

Sure, there are two-way speaker systems costing many thousands of dollars more, but none are capable of reaching the level of objective performance achieved with the SC-II.

"I can state right here and now that the SC-IIs are outstanding performers, not only for two-way models, but also compared to just about anything else, including many top-grade three and four-way designs. In terms of full-range performance, the Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-IIs are among the finest speakers I have had a chance to audition in my own listening room. Indeed, the SC-II may be the best two-way speaker system available today, and if it is not, it certainly can give whatever is in first place a serious run for the money."

DAL SM-I

The SM-I is a new loudspeaker from Dunlavy Audio Labs that achieves a level of accuracy previously thought impossible to obtain from a bookshelf/stand mounted design.

Utilizing a sealed cabinet enclosure, a vertical symmetrical array of drivers that are time aligned and phase coherent, dual gold plated input terminals, a first order crossover, and DAL's proprietary internal wiring, the SM-I provides the highest level of quality and performance possible, while still maintaining a modest size and excellent value.

The proportions of the SM-I are outstanding with regards to vertical and horizontal aspect ratios resulting in wonderful aesthetics. The SM-I is an incredibly attractive speaker capable of effortlessly integrating into a myriad of environments. Combine the elegant appearance of the SM-I with it's ability to recreate the recorded event with a greater degree of objective accuracy and neutrality than any other speaker at the same price.

The driver compliment for the SM-I is two 6.5" mid-woofers and a single 1" dome per cabinet. The vertical symmetrical driver array enables the SM-I to provide an even in-room power response enabling a realistic soundstage with regards to both height and width. Regardless of position in a listening room, the overall spectral balance remains consistent.

Anechoic measurements for the SM-I are a +/- 1.5 dB frequency response from 60 Hz to 20 kHz, with an approximate in-room (normal sized listening room) -3 dB point of a remarkable 40 Hz! The SM-I's ability to resolve low frequency bass information is excellent, with outstanding visceral impact. The spaciousness of the soundstage is superb, and subtle details and immediate transients are recreated with startling realism.

In addition to the SM-I's outstanding performance specifications (backed by a complete set of anechoic measurements for every single pair produced), the speaker's reliability and ability to retain its accuracy after years of extensive use should prove equally important for both consumer and professional applications.

We feel that, dollar for dollar, the Dunlavy Audio Labs SM-I offers a combination of quality and performance that is simply unmatched. The SM-I may well be the finest speaker of it's kind ever produced.

DAL Sigma

From the time of its introduction during 1992, the DAL SC-IV loudspeaker earned international acclaim in top audiophile magazines and among leading recording and mastering studios for its virtually flawless reproduction of complex musical sounds. Indeed, the SC-IV was Stereophile magazine's "1994 Product of the Year" and earned "best sound" awards at numerous audiophile shows throughout the world.

In keeping with its tradition of always pursuing means for improving its products and their performance, DAL introduced the SC-IV/A during 1998. It incorporated a new type of woofer (that made possible an on-axis response down only -3 dB at 20 Hz) and a much more complex crossover network (with nearly twice as many components as the SC-IV). The review of the SC-IV/A by highly respected Robert Deutsch in the November 1998 issue of Stereophile, confirmed that it represented a significant upgrade of the original SC-IV - and a "steal" at its recommended retail selling price.

Now comes the SIGMA-I, a loudspeaker similar to the SC-IV/A but with added complexity and sophistication. Although the SIGMA I uses the same tweeter, mid-range and woofer drivers as the SC-IV/A, that is where the commonality ends. The SIGMA I is larger than the SC-IV/A by approximately 1.5 inches in height, width and depth, by virtue of its double thick (1.5") walls. Also, seen from the front, the SIGMA I has a very attractive 3/4-inch, "quarter-round hardwood trim" that surrounds and "outlines" the SC-IV/A-size grill. Additional internal bracing also adds to the stiffness and acoustically inert properties of the SIGMA I's enclosure.

Further, the complex and sophisticated crossover network of the SIGMA I provides highly accurate reproduction of the most complex musical transients. This attribute is evident from an examination of its well-documented, measured and audible accuracy is without equal in the marketplace - except, of course, that of larger and more expensive DAL loudspeaker models.

The guaranteed performance specifications of the SIGMA I reveal such attributes as an incredible bass extension (-3dB @ 20 Hz), true +/- 1 dB amplitude Vs frequency response (measured anechoically at 10 feet on-axis), near-perfect impulse and step responses, ultra-low levels of non-linear distortion, true on-axis "time/space collimation"(TM) (pulse-coherency), inaudible cabinet diffraction, symmetrical radiation patterns, a very flat curve of impedance Vs frequency (that varies from about 3 to 7 Ohms, with very little reactance), broad vertical/horizontal dispersion and precise pair matching. DAL also performs 100% Q.C. testing of every speaker driver, sub-assembly and each assembled loudspeaker. Final on-axis measurements of frequency response, impulse response, step response, etc. of every speaker are made within one of DAL's two large anechoic chambers, under the direct supervision of a competent engineering staff, to ensure that every performance specification is met or exceeded before shipment.

Indeed, in a world where "flooby-dust" advertising and subjectively-based claims have replaced real, well-documented evidence of performance accuracy, the SIGMA-I offers proof of what today's most advanced loudspeaker technology can accomplish. And, it does so at an affordable price.

Millenium / Model Information

DAL Millenium

The rectangular shape of most loudspeaker enclosures has become almost a ubiquitous industry standard. However, without means for reducing "edge-diffraction", such as the use of sound absorbing felt, etc. between drivers and adjacent edges (as on all DAL loudspeaker models), the frequency response of rectangular loudspeakers incurs a significant number of closely-spaced peaks and valleys. In addition to these frequency response anomalies, edge diffraction also creates time domain "smearing" that is often detected as an audible blurring of musical transients. (A few designers have attempted to mitigate the problem by rounding the edges of their rectangular enclosures but have not used an adequate radius, several inches being required, to achieve any meaningful improvement.)

Research at DAL during the past few years has yielded a unique loudspeaker enclosure having an "X-shaped" cross-section, as viewed from the front. Using a symmetrical, vertical array of drivers (W-M-T-M-W), with the tweeter located at the center of the "X", and the application of sound absorbing felt between the affected drivers and adjacent edges, the effects of edge-diffraction are reduced to virtually inaudible and unmeasurable levels. The "X-shaped" frontal cross-section of the enclosure also reduces the amplitude of side-lobes and improves the low-end bass response of the woofers by eliminating internal parallel walls.

As a consequence, the overall audible and measurable properties of DAL's new MILLENNIUM are truly exceptional. However, the complex shape of the MILLENNIUM enclosure adds a lot of manufacturing time and cost - resulting in a price that is above other DAL models of about the same size and weight. Is the improvement in performance worth the added cost? We believe that most audiophiles in search of truly accurate, state-of-the-art performance will find the suggested retail price of a pair of MILLENNIUM loudspeaker to be well below that of many competing loudspeakers possessing much inferior levels of performance at the same or a higher price.

Indeed, DAL sincerely believes that the MILLENNIUM is yet another example of real progress from a company devoted to achieving true musical accuracy. Why not visit your nearest DAL dealer and discover why so many audiophiles are now listening to our loudspeakers - the only ones with measured performance that confirms their unmatched musical accuracy.
